Subject: [*] MacCurveFit 1.0
Here at long last is MacCurveFIt 1.0 the successor to Curve Fit 0.7. The
program has been completely rewritten from scratch and has many new features.
MacCurveFit is a scientific graphics package that plots scatter graphs (much
like Cricket Graph or Kaleidagraph). The program allows you to perform least
squares curve fitting of _any_ function to a set of data. The program gives
you
a choice of fitting algorithms and lets you select which coefficients can be
modified and which are constant. The package comes which full documentation
and
examples.

Subject: [*] OffHook 1.3
OffHook is a small application which will send a string to the modem and
wait for a specified time before launching another application. It can
invoke RAM drivers such as those installed by QuadraLink software, as well
as the usual modem and printer drivers. It will work with both System 6 and
7.
OffHook is intended to be used as part of a Tabby event. It supports the
update to the Launch.Next file, and is Tabby compatible. New in Version 1.3
is a user-configurable popup menu of applications to be launched after
waiting. The default application in this menu is TeleFinder which is
assumed initially to lie in the same folder as OffHook. Applications in the
popup menu can be added or removed; new applications do NOT have to be in
the OffHook folder.

-FTEXT1 and FTEXT2 will now be output according to the standards
-Disable 'Custom' menu when showing a 'Finger' session
-Implement 'perform clear' command
-Display 'perform' delay in minutes, not seconds
-Fix for permanent 'perform' commands with a +<delay>
-Never change cursors when running in suspended mode
-NET/Mac 2.3.28 supports the Hurdler HDS and HQS 4 port serialcard as well as

Subject: [*] Zipple 1.7.1 - Control Panel/Extension
This is Zipple 1.7.1. Please replace any earlier versions you
may have with this one.
Zipple is a control panel and extension for System 7 that allows
you to replace the title of your Apple, Balloon Help, Keyboard
(if you have it), and/or Application menu with an animated image.
You can use one of the ready-made images that come with Zipple,
or create your own with the sophisticated built in editor.
Zipple 1.7.1 is mainly a maintenance release, but adds one new
feature.
- No longer crashes when you hit "Set" on black and white machines.
- No longer displays strange colors around the Zipples in the menu
bar.
- No longer draws the Balloon Help Zipple over the Keyboard menu.
Now you can choose a Zipple for the Keyboard menu.

Subject: $99 TCI Modem does do faxes!
I don't know if this is old news or not, but the I to sent away for
one of the $99 TCI LineLink 144e modems from MacWarehouse that everyone
has been raving about. The modem works great! There is really no
reason for anyone not to get a high speed modem now. My one gripe
would have to be the lack of seperate Transmit (TX) and Receive (RX)
lights. Instead, it has just one "IO" light which indicates both
transmission anfd reception.
Just for giggles, I tried using my copy of FAX/stf with the LineLink
with the TCI modem. It took a little trial and error, since I didn't
know which chipset the 144e uses, and the 144e is not in the list
of supported modems. I finally got it to work with "PN2388 Rockwell
RC9624AT" setting.
The bottom line is, if you already have some FAX software, it may
work with the LineLink modem, saving you the cost of TCI's fax
"upgrade."

This implies that I understand how aliases manage to figure themselves
out. In fact, I've never figured out when you can replace an original
with a new version and have the alias still work, and when you can't.
I do know that the name has to be the same, and you generally have
to replace the file specifically, rather than throwing out the original
and putting a new copy in its place.
Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. I wish I could figure
out why, but frankly, I just don't grok alias details well enough.
Maybe someone more technical can help.

The setup: 1 phone line, 1 Global Village Teleport Gold fax/modem, 1 IIci.
The problem: We would like to have the IIci be an Appletalk Remote Access
Server AND be able to receive faxes. When ARA is set up to answer incoming
calls, it takes over the serial port and will not relinquish it, thus no faxes
can get in. We have tried using LineShare 2.0, which creates a virtual serial
port for each piece of software that uses the modem, and tries to route
incoming calls to the proper program, but have been unable to get this to work
with faxes (software can't find the modem).
Are there any solutions out there? (We would really prefer not to get another
phone line and another modem.) Thanks in advance.

Dear Netters,
After about 2 weeks of not getting into the archives, I finally got in, BUT
the following problem happened. I attempted to download Pict-show-20.hqx, and
it was done downloading in less than a second. I checked my account to find
out that the contents of the file was:
0Server error: System is too busy right now. Please try again later.
error.host 1
Thus while it may have appeared that the archives were open for a couple of
minutes, actually the lines there still were too busy to download any files.
When I returned to the archives after this download check, the same old
message that has bothered me for 2 weeks now appears again:
Server error: System is too busy right now. Please try again later...
Could someone please send me a copy of Pict-Show-20.hqx in its entirety (about
50k, rounded)? Also the digest is not updated here as frequently as some
other places, if someone could send me an up-to-date copy of the digest every
day I wouldn't have to constantly be unable to find it due to:
Server error: System is too busy right now. Please try again later...
Thank you.

I've seen rash statements like this in the digest, and I'd like to make a
rash suggestion: If we can't rely on Symantec to support a C++ compiler,
why don't we produce and support our own. Virtually every computer science
undergrad or grad student has written a compiler. Here is a chance for
someone (or many someones) to actually put this training in practice, and
in the process, ensure that your favorite computer platform continues to be
viable.
I realize that there are many obstacles to turning a project like this into
a success. I'm sure I can't even begin to identify all of the problems.
Am I all wet? Is this nonsense? Or is this an opportunity we can't afford
to pass up? Let's hear your thoughts.

One of the best CD-ROMs out there for the price is the APple CD-300, which
wins most price/performance tests. It is definitely below $500, even here
in Denmark. I do not have one myself, but it is the one I probably would
buy if I get the money.
Be aware that NEC CD-ROMs are NOT compatible with Apple UNIX A/UX. You can
NOT install A/UX of these, which is enough reason for me to stay away from
NEC mechanisms. As usual, SONY made the Apple CD-ROM, and put an Apple logo

Anybody out there who know how much of Apple's equipment is 100% SONY ? I

Hi,
I recently asked about other people's experiences with this sort of
Ethernet adapter when using MacTCP. There were some replies, and all the
adapters mentioned were reported to be fully MacTCP compatible (and
generally got good reviews from their users).
Since my first posted summary there were a few further replies. So here is
an updated summary.
The following particular devices were mentioned:
1) Asante EN/SC for PowerBook (4 replies)
(There was a warning about the EN/SC's hardware: It was said that
instead of putting a real SCSI controller into the EN/SC Asante uses one
that doesn't implement all legitimite SCSI commands. There is an INIT
that works around this problem but if a problem occurs before this INIT
loads then the Asante EN/SC could hang the SCSI bus.)
2) Dayna Port SCSI/Link-3 (2 replies)
3) Compatible Systems Ether+ (2 replies)
(It was mentioned that he power cord must be connected to the
Ether+ before plugging the power supply into the wall. Otherwise
the power supply fuse could blow.)
4) Focus EtherLAN SC (1 reply)
(The person who replied was satisfied with it but had heard about
problems somebody else had with this device.)
Thanks to all the people who took the time to reply.

TurboGopher can FTP files just fine, but is not as good an FTP client
as Fetch (it doesn't report file sizes and dates, for instance). However,
TurboGopher lets you access hundreds of public Gopher servers that
contain full text information and databases that you can search. It
also links to WAIS databases.
Finally, if you go into Other Information and Gopher Servers, and
then go into the Search gopherspace with Veronica, you can use Veronica
to search for files or other gopher servers. Frankly, I find Veronica
much more useful than Archie, although I gather that's because it
cruises the nets updating things all the time, whereas as Archie is
only accurate as of about a month.
Oh, TurboGopher is also multitasking, so you can do other things while
you download a file...

An Alternative:
Since GEnie is not Binhex friendly, use UUencoding instead.
UUencoding has a fixed line length of 64 characters each of which begins with
the letter M. There are uuencoding applications for the Mac and other
platforms.
StuffIt Lite/Deluxe has a uuencoder/decoder under the "Translators" menu.

Far more obvious, Robert. :-) I'd forgotten that uuencode started
each line with an M, but that was probably why I suggested it as the

There are three ways to fix this.
1) Install A Small Pattern.
Use whatever desktop pattern toy you were playing with to save a small 8 x 8
pattern into the System file.
2) Replace The System.
If you do this be sure to drag the old System file to the trash then startup
with the System 7 Install 1 disk. If you don't trash the old system first, the
installer saves the desktop pattern from the old System file and puts it in
the
new one. You will have accomplished nothing.
3) Use ResEdit.
<Professional drivers only, on a closed road.>
Open the System file with ResEdit.
Double click "ppat" and select and cut resource #16. This is your current
desktop pattern.
Double click "ppt#". This is where the color patterns live.
Double click resource #0, the only one.
On the right side of the editor, select any one of the color patterns by
single
clicking it.
Copy and paste this pattern into "ppat".
Do a <Command> <i> or select "Get Resource Info" from the Resource menu.
Change the ID# to 16.
Save and quit ResEdit.
You should now be able to select any of the color patterns in the General
Cdev.

Like many folks, I'm using the StyleWriter II driver on my StyleWriter I.
Unfortunately, when I go to print from Word, the print dialog opens with
"Greyscale" already set. I've noticed that on each document I've printed
once, the dialog opens later with the same settings in it, but what about
the default? Anyone know how to change (hack) the driver to start with
Black and White at the default and then I can change it to greyscale if I
want to.
Many other programs open the print dialog with Black and White set, for
instance, my envelope printer. This would suggest that it's possible to
specify a default in the driver's prefs file, or in a resource in Word.
If someone can explain how to change the defaults, I'll post a file with
easy-to-follow instructions to the archives . . . or a resource file with
the fix ready to copy and paste.

Subject: Monitor Madness (Help!)
I have something of a strange story to relate regarding controlling
monitor
brightness. The machine I use is a IIvx (8/80) with Sys 7 and no virtual
memory. A while back I discovered a control panel called "Twilight" (version
7.1.4 by Macbear Software Development). This program was supposed to dim one's
monitor in similar fashion as a screen saver--at preset times of idle
activity.
Further, one could set a percentage of dimness desired. I was a little dubious
that this would work on my Apple 14" monitor since it has external brightness
controls, but nonetheless I gave it a shot.
The short of it is that the control panel did in fact work, with the only
problem being that adjusting the percentage of desired dimness did not change
unless the machine was rebooted. Small annoyance. So I was quite happy with
this energy saving arrangement until I ran Apple's Software Update a few weeks
later. After that Twilight ceased working. Attempts to open the file gave me
the repeated message that "The control panel 'Twlight' cannot be used with
this Macintosh." If I had never gotten it to work previous to this there would
be no problem. What the heck did the update do that decreased my computer's
functionality? Was this on purpose or some strange fluke?
Needless to say, when I discovered the more recent Monitor Energy Saver
panel (which sounds almost identical to Twilight) I was somewhat hopeful that
this would again work. No dice. Now I am really wondering if there is someway
to restore that functionality to my machine. Even though I am told it will not
work, I HAVE SEEN WITH MY OWN EYES THAT IT WILL.
I would love to hear from anyone with thoughts or similar experiences
concerning this issue that might help me make sense of it all. Personally,
I am baffled.

Subject: RAM serial driver error
We have 2 brand new Centris 650s that are encountering the same weird error:
Whenever the user quits from a program, the Mac will seem to hang, but pauses
for about 30 seconds. Just when you're ready to hit the reset button, the
following error message appears:
trouble closing RAM
serial driver: 11664
With an "OK" to click. If you clicked OK, everything would continue normally,
and the program would quit just fine.
We called Apple, and after 35 minutes on hold, were told "Gee, we don't really
don't know what that means. We don't troubleshoot based on error codes. Try
reinstalling 7.1, and make sure that the applications are 7.1 compatible."
The apps are Quark 3.2, MacWrite II, and Mac Kermit. I have run these on my
650
with no problems.
Any ideas?

Subject: SAME document, DIFFERENT size
I am using two Macs (a IIci in my office and a SE/30 at home).
They both run with system 7.1 I have noticed that the SAME
Word 5.1 document, when saved on the SE/30 has consistently a
larger size than when it is saved on the IIci. For example, this
morning I saved a document at home a 136K document; on my
office computer its size went down to 121K (of course, I had not
added or subtracted text). How come??? So far, this hasnUt
caused any problem, but IUm curious.
Thanks for your help.

Subject: scripting additions (R)
I have partly answered my own question regarding a logarithm function for
applescript. instead of relying on an applescript scripting addition, i
can pass an "evaluate" command to excel and access its functions. e.g.
tell application "Excel"
Evaluate "log10(55)"
end tell
to pass a variable, you must construct the string to be evaluated:
copy 10 to i
tell application "Excel"
copy (Evaluate "log10(" & i & ")") to k
end tell
k
in a crude test, i used the random function to test the performance
difference between a scripting addition and an excel function. when i
calculated the random function 1000 times, the scripting addition took 4
min & 10 sec (PB170, 8MB RAM, Sys 7.1). the excel function was
approximately 5% slower. not bad, however, excel did crash once. i wonder
if the evaluate commands were being sent too quickly to excel.
it would be great if someone would convert the instrinsic functions (log,
sine, etc.) present in Symantec's Think C into applescript scripting
additions.

Subject: SGI's screendumps and macs
There is a very wonderful program to run on IRIX on the SGI (and *many* other
UNIX platforms) called "xv". This can read in many different formats of file
(including, as of xv version 3.0, SG image format (".rgb" files)) It can then
save these in: Gif, PM, PBM, X11 bitmap, Sun Rasterfile, BMP, PostScript,
IRIS,
JPEG and TIFF.
xv 3.0 is available from most UNIX software archives, and costs about US$25 to
register (site licences available).
[I have no connection with John Bradley, xv's author, other than as a happy
user
of xv and having arranged a site license for our University]

Forgive the question, but I've been offline for a few months...
Once you get the speech manager files what do you do with them?
How close to human voices are the results (I shoved everything in the
system folder and get a definitely mechanical voice...)?

Subject: stylewriter cartridges..dry up?
Good morning....
I have a stylwriter printer of which i have hardly used the last 2
months.
I wanted to print out 1 page a few days ago and the result was half a page
of the text. One could see *very* faintly the rest of the text. Since i used
this cartridge for almost a year, i figured it was empty. I installed new
one which was purchased same time as the pre-mentioned. It did the same
thing. Is it possible the new cart dried out also?? The expir date on
both are OCT 92. Will a new cart dry out if it is not used?? Thanks.

Subject: StyleWriter II driver + Sys 6.0.8 + S.W. 1 = ??
There was, not too long ago, a convenient ResEdit hack for making the
driver for StyleWriter II (more) compatible with original StyleWriter I
and since I have a S-W I and have heard that the driver for the II is
much superior, I downloaded the hack and then (not without some help
>From this list) obtained a copy of the S-W II driver.
The resultant "StyleWriter I+" driver requires the "new" Chooser, so
my friendly contributor included it in the BinHexxed file that was sent
so I installed the new Chooser and rebooted, only to be told that the
new Chooser requires System 7.x in order to run. So I snarled and put
it on my auxiliary-system Floptical where I keep a copy of System 7 for
those times when I experience a lapse of reason and decide I want to
run System 7.
On my main hard drive, with System 6, I'm still using the SW-I driver.
Well, folks, today I was in a computer store and picked up a brochure
for the StyleWriter II, produced by Apple, and in that brochure it says
that the StyleWriter II requires at least System 6.0.7 to run. Not
7.x. Waitaminnit!
If the StyleWriter II can be run from System 6.0.7, presumably the
driver it ships with does, too. Okay, is there perhaps a "new" Chooser
that is a little bit LESS "new" than the one that requires System 7 in
order to function?
Any one with the straight dope on how to convince my StyleWriter I that
it is a StyleWriter II and do greyscale printing and whatnot WITHOUT
having to use System 7, would you please email me the secret at the
belowmentioned address?
(Yeah, I know, I'll eventually be dragged kicking and screaming into a
System 7 world as more and more software requires it, but not yet,
please.)

Subject: StyleWriter II driver buggy?
I've gotten calls from 6 users so far who report the following error. When
they
print to their StyleWriter IIs, instead of 1 copy being sent to PrintMonitor,
it
sends MANY copies (in one case it was over 200!). I've seen it happen myself,
so
it's not a case of them typing in multiple copies in the print dialog box.
This has happened on Mac LC IIIs, Centris 610s, a Mac SE (6.0.8), and Color
Classics. In all cases a system and printer driver re-install solved the
problem, but does anyone know WHAT causes this? Thanks!

If you insert a bad floppy into a mac when anything but the finder is running
in the forground. The system ignores it. I understand that it doesn't want
to bother you but, it could at least warn you when you switch to finder.

I would need to update to W.K. 11.13 before I could update to W.K. 11.14.
I couldn't find a copy of W.K.11.13 in the archives. Does anyone

The most recent Digi-Key catalog lists two switches as being suitable
for use in Macintosh mice:
D-K part Price Cherry part
CH164-ND 2amp 2.94 DG1C-B1AA
CH167-ND 50ma 3.13 DG2C-B1AA
I opened an ADB mouse but could not read any part number on the switch.
It *looked* like the one in the D-K catalog, but I cannot guarantee anything.
(It is also unclear why they list 2 switches, unless some mice use
*lots of power* <grin>.)
Digi-Key has a $5.00 handling fee for orders under $25.00. They are one
of the friendliest and most competent mail-order companies, in my
experience. Their phone number is 1-800-344-4539 and they take normal
plastic money. They send out a new catalog every 2 months and will
honor the current catalog's prices. (But, then, if you buy electronic
components, then you probably already know about Digi-Key.)

Enclosed is a new version of Ars Magna called Ars Magna II. I recomplied
Mike Morton's ars.c code to use think's console library. This makes it a
little more compatible but its still just a C program with command line
interface.
I gave it a new signature and icon to keep it separate for the other version.
I did this because someone here needed to use ars magna and the old version
would trash his screen. Hopefully some one will give it a good interface
and make it a real mac program. I just don't have the time.
